Frequently Asked Questions about Direct Primary Care at Hearthside Family Health (HFH)
Can I use my insurance for medications, labs, or specialist visits?
Yes, while DPC covers primary care services within the clinic, patients can still use their health insurance for medications, laboratory tests, specialist visits, and services not provided directly by the DPC clinic. We simply send your insurance information to them and THEY will bill your insurance.
Is DPC a replacement for health insurance?
No, DPC is not a replacement for health insurance. We recommend that you have at least a high-deductible plan or a health-sharing plan to cover expensive possibilities such as hospitalizations and surgeries.
Can DPC save me money?
Yes, for many people, DPC can reduce overall healthcare costs. By covering all primary care needs for a flat fee, members often save on out-of-pocket expenses and avoid unnecessary visits to specialists or urgent care. In our highest cost bracket of $85/mo, an entire YEAR of care is only $1020. This is a predictable monthly cost that you can budget for. We also help patients navigate the healthcare system to find cost-saving options for imaging and medication.
Can I cancel my DPC membership?
YES, there is no minimum commitment to join our practice. You can cancel your membership anytime with 30 days written notice.
How does DPC handle prescription medications?
We can prescribe your medication to your pharmacy-of-choice. For patients without insurance or with large copays, we help you compare and save on necessary medications using free & available savings programs.
What if I need laboratory testing?
HFH provides in-house lab draws without a draw fee. As part of your membership, a metabolic panel and cholesterol panel is included for FREE once a year. We send labs daily to Quest, which can either bill your insurance company or bill our practice. We have contracted with Quest for greatly discounted rates and pass that savings on to you.
Does DPC cover specialist referrals?
The cost of your membership covers just your primary care but we can help facilitate your referral to a specialist.
What happens if I need medical care while traveling?
We offer virtual visits to our members, allowing you to receive advice and care from your provider no matter where you are. For some issues, merely texting us a photo will allow us to help you.
What are the benefits of joining a DPC clinic?
Benefits include more time with your doctor or nurse practitioner, no wait times, same-day appointments, a focus on preventive care, transparent pricing, and reduced out-of-pocket costs for primary care services. Plainly said, we deliver better care and it shows:
Studies by DPC groups Qliance and Access Healthcare Direct both showed a 65% reduction in emergency department visits and 30% to 50% reduction in hospitalizations for patients in DPC practices. They also found that DPC patients report higher satisfaction, maintain better blood pressure control, and have fewer specialist visits and surgical procedures
